It’s strange that though the songs on this record have been written over the last 14 years, the words and messages I’ve been trying to convey don’t feel dated to me – be that for better or worse.
Some suggest that time isn’t actually linear the way we experience it.
Einstein proposed that time is not a fixed progression but rather a flexible dimension – that past, present, and future are all existing simultaneously but we, as the observers, just experience everything sequentially.
So if he was right, these songs have always existed – it’s just that we are only now observing them on this timeline.
I plucked them from the great unconscious “then” but it wasn’t time to share them until “now”.
Which truly is all that there ever is, was, will be.. the great “now”. The present.
Still it’s easy to find myself slipping between dimensions.
Having conversations with people I’ll never physically see again on this timeline. Still celebrating milestones with them on others where we’re each still breathing. Perhaps the other half of the conversation is happening in their present on another line where I’m the one that’s not physically there.
As for this one.. it felt like, finally, I needed to make this album, share these songs, paint these pictures, write these words.. at this particular time on this specific timeline. Who knows when this all got released on others? But I’m sure that it was.
I think there’s a part of me afraid that if I didn’t offer it all now, it would probably go to the grave with me.
I never really thought or planned to make it to this age.
(There’s a longer essay to be written about the effects of seeing what my generation has seen play out that maybe led to us doubting we’d get the chance to, or even want to, grow old – but that’s for another time.)
Here I am – for better or worse offering this batch of songs that tells some of my story.
Perhaps releasing some of this will make the next part of my present a little lighter. I appreciate that the songs and words came to me and what time I got to grow with them but I have to drop them into the river.
While I have self recorded and released records in the past, TIMELINES is by far the most intimate project that I have ever created. It’s the first project I’ve ever released under my actual name – using various monickers or band names in the past, but this batch of tunes and project are more personal than anything I’ve offered in the past.
It is me in all my busted up beautiful glory.
I trust that these songs and this project are finding you when they’re supposed to, the way they found me.
