You hovered 2 feet above me
On the hood of our car
Singing, “It must have been love
but it’s over now.”
While the rain tap-danced wildly
Tied up our tongues
Twisted our stomachs
Taunted all our thoughts
Taught us it’s okay to leave
So I left
Even though I knew what it was
What it still is for me
How the life that we lived
Sometimes sits in when I sleep
I’m not resting easy
Fumbling through my waking life
Tumbling toward a crossroad
Never knowing which left is right
Standing still is dangerous
Life doesn’t wait for you to choose
The rabbits do run
The years do catch up
Time does slip
Into bitter-sweet oblivion
I don’t know where I’m going
I don’t know what I’ll do
With the space that keeps expanding
Between me and you
And the darkness
That hangs heavy on the past
Singing, “Love will tear you apart
You will never get it back!”
But that’s all just bull shit
Maybe I will or maybe I won’t
At least I swam in it for all those years
Even if I end up alone
I don’t know where I’m going
I know where I’ve been
I’ve driven past the edge before
I won’t do that again
Farewell, my faithful friend
Until we meet again
I will hold you in my heart
